1999 AWARD WINNING AML RECLAMATION: NEW MEXICO
Located outside Socorro, New Mexico this project reclaimed 24 abandoned mine shafts, adits, and stope openings while preserving a highly significant bat habitat in the mine workings. Because the mine workings were home to a large population of bats, gates were constructed that allow ventilation and bat entry; but, keep people safely out. The hibernating populations of Townsend's big-eared bats have increased steadily since the mine features were protected with bat-compatible closures. Earthquake Hazards Program: Earthquake History of New Mexico
The earliest reported earthquake in New Mexicowas an intensity V tremor that occurrednear Socorro on April 20, 1855.In the years that followed, Socorro was struck by numerouslow to moderate intensity earthquakes.Most of these caused little or no damage andwere felt over a small area.However, beginning on July 2, 1906,and lasting well into 1907 the area wasaffected by shocks almost daily.There were three fairly severe shocks in this series. The first was an intensity VIItremor that struck on July 12 and cracked some adobe wallsand threw others down.Ground fissures and visible waves on the surfacewere reported with this earthquake.Another shock of intensity VII on July 16,was felt at Raton, about 370 km northeastof Socorro and at Douglas, Arizona, about 420 km southwest.The epicenter was probably about 16 km west of Socorro.On November 15 , an intensity VII shockwas felt over an area of about 250,000 square kilometers.Rumbling sounds were heard during this earthquake.Later shocks occurr ... City of Socorro
This year the City of Socorro kicked off the holiday season on Thanksgiving weekend with the Fifth Annual Balloon Rally.  The annual event is sponsored each year by the Mayor Bhasker & City of Socorro, the Socorro Chamber of Commerce, the Socorro Balloon Rally committee and  other businesses and individuals from in & around our community.  This year's event, which is usually held in late December, was a HUGE success with the move to Thanksgiving weekend.  Over 35 balloons were on hand for the  Saturday and Sunday launch from the Tripps' field.  Pictured below are three of the crowd favorites plus one special little (nice) witch. ...
