About White Sands Test Facility ...

We provide support to the NASA Reusable Launch Vehicle program with propulsion system test facilities, vehicle servicing, payload integration, component evaluation and refurbishment, and launch and landing support capabilities. For example, the four liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen engines in the reusable DC-X vertical takeoff and vertical landing technology demonstrator vehicle were initially test-fired at WSTF before flight. Propellant servicing equipment and related ground operations were subsequently provided to support the DC-X launches from the nearby White Sands Space Harbor (WSSH). ... [Read More]

White Sands National Monument - Nature & Science
The largest pure gypsum dune field in the world is located at White Sands National Monument in south-central New Mexico. This region of glistening white dunes is in the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert within an "internally drained valley" called the Tularosa Basin. The monument ranges in elevation from 3890' to 4116' above sea level. There are approximately 275 total square miles of dune fields here, with 115 square miles (about 40%) located within White Sands National Monument. The remainder is on military land that is not open to the public. This dune field is very dynamic, with the most active dunes moving to the northeast at a rate of up to 30 feet per year, while the more stable areas of sand move very little. The pure gypsum (hydrous calcium sulfate) that forms these unusual dunes originates in the western portion of the monument from an ephemeral lake or playa with a very high mineral content. As the water evaporates (theoretically as much as 80" per year!), the minerals a ... [Read More]

Geology of White Sands National Monument
In any event, it appears clear from the limited thermoluminescence dates at hand, as well as regional geology, that a major dune-building episode in the region probably began somewhere around 6500-7000 years ago. Such a chronology would fit patterns recorded nearby at Lake Estancia and by other workers in the basin (Note: see Brenda Buck’s thesis and discussion of her chronology in my report). The present White Sands dune field most likely did not begin to form until a substantial portion of Lake Otero had dried up. Some [fossil?] dunes northeast of Lake Lucero have been dated at 6,500 years (S. Stokes, personal communication). This date is most likely representative the large-scale dune formation event that defined the present White Sands. The present day dunes, which overlay 25-30 feet of gypsum sand in places, are quite young from “yesterday” to perhaps hundreds of years in age. Subsurface crossbedded dune deposits such as those cored by Eddie McKee in his landmark ... [Read More]

New Mexico PHO, Physician Group, and Their Agent Settle FTC Price-Fixing Charges
The FTC’s complaint charges that White Sands’ physician and nurse anesthetist members refuse to deal individually with health plans and instead enter into contracts that Laurenza negotiates on their behalf. The FTC’s complaint also states that White Sands claims to operate as a “messenger model.” Competing providers may lawfully use a “messenger” to reduce costs and facilitate contracting with payors, as long as the arrangement does not involve collective price-setting or other anticompetitive agreements among the providers. In this case, the FTC’s complaint alleges, the respondents engaged in collective negotiations with payors and orchestrated collective refusals to deal with payors that resisted their terms. According to the FTC, White Sands’ members’ joint negotiations did not enhance efficiency or consumer welfare. ... [Read More]
