In 2003, COEP continued regular participation in AUM quarterly meetings, as well as hosting and co-sponsoring the annual conference. The conference brought together Navajo communities and agencies, US agencies including EPA and US Army Corps of Engineers, state agencies including Groundwater Quality Bureau, and educational institutions including Northern Arizona University and New Mexico State University to collaborate on solutions to uranium contamination as a result of both anthropogenic and natural uranium throughout the Navajo Nation. ... Harrison Schmitt was born in Santa Rita on July 3, 1935. He graduated from the California Institute of Technology and studied under a Fulbright fellowship at the University of Oslo in Norway. He received a doctorate in geology from Harvard in 1964, and worked as a geologist for the Department of Interior.
