Impounds the Pecos River approximately 121 mi E of Albuquerque. Follow direction signs through city of Santa Rosa to the lake. The visitor center contains an interesting display on project area.Ten thousand years ago, PaleoIndians hunted mammoth and bison throughout the area of what is now known as Santa Rosa. Today, Santa Rosa Dam and Lake offers 25 miles of shoreline with abundant recreational activities for all visitors. Boating, fishing, and swimming are the most popular activities, as well as camping, hiking and birding. During the winter months, migrating birds, including warblers, raptors, various waterfowl and bald eagles come and roost at Santa Rosa Lake. The Corps of Engineers Visitor Center at Santa Rosa boasts a diorama of the dam that includes a section of the control tower and its inner workings.
