: There are several Wildlife Management Areas in Cape May managedby the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, includingCape May Wetlands Wildlife Management Area in the salt marshes inthe Atlantic backbarrier lagoons, Higbee Beach, Dennis Creek, andHieslerville Wildlife Management Areas along Delaware Bay, andBeaver Swamp Wildlife Management Area on the inland part of thepeninsula. State parks managed by the New Jersey Division ofLands and Forests include Cape May Point State Park whichcontains Cape May Point and Cape May Wetlands Natural Areas,Corsons Inlet State Park which contains Strathmere Natural Area,and Great Sound State Park. Because of the State’s interest in maintaining its beaches as well as concern over future supplies of sand, a cooperative program with MMS was initiated in 1992. The first phase of the program was to inventory beach erosion along the entire coast of New Jersey and to identify areas where sand for future nourishment would be needed most. Geological and geophysical work began in 1994 in an area off Avalon and Townsends Inlet in southern New Jersey. The State completed a report in 1996 documenting sand shoals in this area and estimating volumes of sand available for beach nourishment.
