NJDEP Coastal Engineering
New Jersey's Shore Protection Program was created to provide for the protection of life and property along the coast, preserve the vital coastal resources of New Jersey, and maintain safe and navigable waterways throughout the State. Operating under the Office of Engineering and Construction within the Department of Environmental Protection's Natural and Historic Resources Group, the Bureau of Coastal Engineering is responsible for administering beach nourishment, shore protection and coastal dredging projects throughout the State. Additionally, the Bureau maintains the State's aids to navigation, provides 24-hour operation of the Raritan Bayshore Floodgate and is responsible for conducting storm surveys, damage assessments and emergency repairs for coastal storms impacting New Jersey. ... NJDEP - CMP - New Jersey Coast 2005
          New Jersey's Coast 2005 follows the release of two federal studies characterizing the declining state of America's coastal resources. In April 2004, Commissioner Campbell circulated to the public a white paper outlining proposals to better protect the environment and economy of New Jersey's shore. Commissioner Campbell then convened public hearings to gather input on the proposals. Joining the Commissioner at these hearings were federal, state and local elected officials, environmental and shore advocacy groups, representatives from shore-based businesses and members of the general public. Wrote the law requiring states to regularly test recreational beach water quality to make sure a day at the beach doesn't result in a trip to the doctor. Wrote the law banning ocean dumping of sewage sludge. Wrote provision of Clean Water Act ending dumping of raw sewage in New York Harbor. Led efforts to ban oil and gas drilling off the Jersey Shore. Wrote the law that bans the dumping of plastics from ships into the ocean and restricts the dumping of other material. Amended the Water Resources Development Act to require the Corp of Engineers to use ships to clean up floating debris in New York Harbor. Secured funding to clean up New Jersey lakes, including: Cranberry Lake (Sussex County), Lake Sylvan and Strawbridge Lake (Burlington County), and Alcyon Lake (Gloucester County), Weequahic Lake (Essex County), and Lake Hopatcong (Morris County). New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail Route (National Park Service)
The New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail Route was established in 1988 "to provide for public appreciation, education, understanding, and enjoyment" of significant natural and cultural sites associated with the coastal area of the State of New Jersey. The Coastal Heritage Trail is divided into five regions linked by the common heritage of life on the Jersey Shore and Raritan and Delaware bays. Five themes define different aspects of coastal life: Maritime History, Coastal Habitats, Wildlife Migration, Historic Settlements, and Relaxation and Inspiration.   Hosted by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), the third installment of the Summit on the Shore was held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, and brought together members of the tourism industry, local business owners and state and local officials to chart the course for the future of the Jersey Shore.  Joining the Governor were Environmental Protection Commissioner Bradley M.
