02-22-05 -- NEWARK -- Eleven sitting and former Monmouth County public officials -- including the current mayors of Keyport, Hazlet and West Long Branch -- were arrested early this morning, charged with extorting cash bribes and free work from a contractor who was cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A news conference is scheduled for 12:30 today at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Newark, in the 7th Floor Conference Room. NIOSH FACE Program: New Jersey Case Report 01NJ118 | CDC/NIOSH
On October 22, 2001, a federal OSHA compliance officer notified FACE staff of a youth who was killed in a machine-related incident. A FACE investigator conferred with the compliance officer and arranged to conduct a concurrent investigation that was done on October 25, 2001. During the visit, FACE investigators were permitted to watch OSHA interview witnesses and to examine the pizza dough mixer. The area was photographed and a FACE investigator privately interviewed the restaurant owner. Additional information was obtained from the police report, the medical examiner's report, and the OSHA investigation file. The victim's employer was a family-owned pizza restaurant that had been purchased by the owner about 18 months before the incident. The restaurant employed five people at the time of the incident. Most of the workers spoke Spanish as their primary language, with the owner being bilingual in Spanish and English. Employee training was entirely on-the-job. The victim was a 15-year- ... Many famous musicians played at the Dreamland Cafe, including Ella Fitzgerald, Erskine Hawkins, and Sarah Vaughan. State and local tourism officials believe that gas prices will have no impact on summer traveling in the Garden State. In fact, AAA's latest Fuel Gauge Report points to lower retail gasoline prices as the summer vacation season nears in New Jersey and the nation. Overall, AAA estimates that 37.2 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday, a 2.2 percent increase from last year. According to Nancy Byrne, Executive Director of the New Jersey Office of Travel & Tourism, "Eighty-eight percent of all overnight leisure travelers come to New Jersey by car. Because the majority of these visitors come from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, I believe we are well-positioned to have a successful Jersey Shore driving season." ... [Read More]
