: The New JerseyPinelands habitat complex as defined here occupies more thanone-quarter of the state of New Jersey's land area, and its majorboundary approximates, in large part, the boundaries establishedfor the Pinelands National Reserve and the state Pinelands Area.One important boundary distinction between those two areas isthat the federal Reserve, totaling 445,000 hectares (1.1 millionacres), includes land east of the Garden State Parkway and to thesouth bordering Delaware Bay that is omitted from the379,204-hectare (937,000-acre) state Pinelands Area. : All the underwater lands of the estuary are in state ownership.Most of the salt marshes west of the Garden State Parkway bridgeare part of the 5,380-hectare (13,300-acre) Lester G. MacNamaraWildlife Management Area managed by the New Jersey Division ofFish, Game and Wildlife. Public lands also include county parkssuch as Atlantic County's Estell Manor Park. About 66% of theGreat Egg Harbor River watershed is within the PinelandsManagement Area and about 17% is publicly owned. The New JerseyNatural Heritage Program recognizes several Priority Sites forBiodiversity within the Great Egg Harbor River estuary.
