Laconia is the thirteenth largest city in New Hampshire. According to U.S. Census data from 1990, thepopulation of Laconia in 1990 was 15,743. Only 53% of the population reported living in the samehouse or apartment for more than five years. Children less than 5 years old and adults over 65 years oldaccounted for 23% of the population. The total number of people living within one-mile of the MesserStreet MGP Site was 9,317 ( Figure 1 ). Six hundred and eighty-one (681) of these residents lived withina quarter-mile of the site. However, after conducting an OR analysis, it was found that therewas no statistically significant difference between people living within a one-quarter mile radius ofthe Messer Street MGP Site and the rest of the population of Laconia. ...

The findings from our descriptive epidemiological analyses are illustrated in Table 7 titled, "CancerIncidence in Laconia, New Hampshire (1993-1997)". The data is presented, by gender, in tabular formwith the heading of each column describing the type of cancer, the expected number of cases for thatparticular type of cancer, followed by the observed number of cases for that specific cancer. Astandardized incidence ratio (SIR) and 95% confidence interval (statistical tests)have been calculatedfor each type of cancer. Any types of cancer that have been omitted from the table, have been excludeddue to a value of less than 4 observed cases over the five-year time period (1993-1997).
