VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System
The major academic affiliations for VASNHCS are the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno, and the East Bay Surgical Program at the University of California, San Francisco.  Approximately 44 medical, surgical, and psychiatry residents rotate annually through VASNHCS, as well as approximately 12 pharmacy students through a partnership with the Idaho State University and University of Southern Nevada Schools of Pharmacy.  Additionally, there are five pharmacy residents through the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) residency program.  A number of students, interns, and residents from ancillary services and other academic affiliations also receive training at VASNHCS.  The VASNHCS Research program has a budget of approximately $1.5m, with 49 projects in neurology, oncology, surgery, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, and pharmacy. ... Questions have been raised by physicians and othersas to how to manage and monitor pain control. Marne Vervan, Pharm.D., is a Pharmacy Practice Resident and Assistant Instructor at the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System – Dallas and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy. Dr. Vervan received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in 1994 and received her Pharm.D. from the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy in 2003. Dr. Vervan’s resident research project is entitled “Assessment of IVIG Drug Utilization and the Incidence of Acute Renal Failure and Thrombosis.” Her professional interests include oncology, infectious disease, internal medicine, and pediatrics. State Summary for Nevada
In 1999, VA opened a state-of-the-art clinical building in Reno.   This facility houses acute inpatient beds and primary care clinics, relocated from an older building constructed in the 1940s.   Significant clinical construction activities include the installation of a new MRI, moving surgical and medical specialties into new and larger space and the installation of a cardiac catheterization laboratory.   Renovations are underway to improve and increase clinical space in the operating rooms, intensive care unit, rehabilitation medicine facilities (including physical and occupational therapies) and the inpatient pharmacy.   A new parking structure will be constructed in fiscal year 2005.   Renovations in the planning stages include an emergency room expansion, primary care expansion and radiology expansion.   The Sierra and Southern Nevada systems have extensive affiliations with schools, including the University of Nevada, Southern California Colleg ...         Attorney General Frankie SueDel Papa recently announced that the State of Nevada and the Sanford Center for Aging andDepartment of Health Ecology at the University of Nevada, Reno, received a grant of$450,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Other partners involved include theNevada State Medical Association, HealthInsight, Hospice Association of Nevada, andVistaCare Hospice.
