Facts about Lake Tahoe. Snow, rain, and streams filled the southern and lowest part of the basin, forming the ancestral Lake Tahoe. Modern Lake Tahoe was shaped and landscaped by the scouring glaciers during the Ice Age (the Great Ice Age began a million or more years ago). Many streams flow into Lake Tahoe, but the lake is drained only by the Truckee River, which flows northeast through Reno and into Pyramid Lake in Nevada. ... that the depth of Lake Tahoe changes every day as the lake level changes. The deepest measurement from the 1998 bathymetric survey was 1,637 ft (499 m) deep. The depth of Lake Tahoe depends on the height it is measured from; some measurements use sea level as a base reference, others use different points of reference. The appropriate reference, or datum, for Lake Tahoe's depth is still being debated. Therefore the measured depth of a lake is only preliminary data and may change. ... [Read More]

Lake Tahoe Change Detection Burn area Extensive changes resulting from forest fires can be observed insatellite images. Changes in greenness, displayed here as a dark bluecolor, show an area of vegetation which has become blackened from burning. Conifer mortality Scientists at Boston University have made ground measurements toquantify the decrease in the forest canopy as a result of drought. Thesustained drought conditions weakened the trees and made them moresusceptible to insect attacks. Satellite images can be used to estimatethe geographic extent of the damaged area. Forest clear-cutting Droughts increase the geographic extent of exposed lakebeds, where newvegetation can be seen using satellite images. Changes in land use ortimber harvesting activities can also be seen in this forested area. Dry lake These images were taken at the beginning and culmination of droughtconditions in the western U.S. A broad shallow lake that was full ofwater in 1986 was empty, and the entire lake bed exposed, in 1992. ... Geology and Natural History of Lake Tahoe The Tahoe Basin, like the Carson Valley, has dropped between two uplifted blocks, The Sierra crest on the west and the Carson Range on the east. This is a relatively recent development, occurring within the last several million years. Magma generated by the pressures and temperatures that also caused the faulting and uplifting welled up through gaps in the faults. A prominent area of this volcanic area occurred just north of the lake. Andesite flows from these vents bisected and dammed the valley. Eventually, as the lake rose the Truckee River was able to cut through these flows and find its present course around the volcanics to the lowlands of Nevada. Subsequent glacial (2 million to 20,000 years ago) action just downstream of the lake (from the Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley canyons) dammed the river and so the level of the lake has fluctuated drastically over time. The maximum lake level during glaciation approached 800 feet higher than its present level. Large sedimentary terrace ... [Read More]
Nevada Division of State Parks - Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park - Marlette-Hobart Backcountry The trail to Marlette Lake via North Canyon Road is the easiest access into the back-country. A steeper access is available at Tunnel Creek Road. The one time millpond, Spooner Lake, now offers fishing and is surrounded by a peaceful, attractive natural area that provides opportunities for walking and nature study in the spring, summer and fall. USGS: Pacific Sea-Floor Mapping: Lake Tahoe The major objective of this survey was to map the bathymetry of Lake Tahoe, California-Nevada to fulfill a commitment made during the Lake Tahoe Presidential Forum in 1997. The only existing bathymetry of Lake Tahoe, collected in 1923, was recently compiled by Rowe and Stone (1997), but the data density is inadequate for the level of scientific studies ongoing and anticipated in the near future for Lake Tahoe. Recent advances in marine multibeam-sonar capabilities now permit a cost-effective way, to precisely map the bathymetry of large areas of the ocean floor with 100% coverage. This survey applied this state-of-the-art ocean technology to Lake Tahoe. The newest of these high-resolution multibeam mapping systems also simultaneously collects backscatter (similar to sidescan sonar) imagery that results in a complimentary and co-registered data set that is related to the distribution of lake-floor materials and textures. The two types of maps that resulted from this cruise provide the m ... [Read More]
