InterLinc: Planning : Downtown Master Plan Comments
As far as green space in the downtown area, I thought we were going to have the mall between the capitol and unl converted to green space. I believe parking is somewhat of a problem but a number of parking garages have been built in the last 5 years so this should be a declining concern. In regards to parking downtown, I believe that parking should be free on Saturdays and especially during football games - it was not fun getting a ticket during a football game because I could not get back to plug my meter - good PR city and police. ... Reading Promotion Projects
The W. J. Gurganus Elementary School-Media Center student body comes together to exchange books at least one week a year. They receive a ticket (ticket color denotes condition of book) for each book they turn in. On the last two days of the week the students return to pick out books to take home from the box that matches their color ticket. This is great for beginning the year, and swapping all the books they read over the summer.. ...

Fairview Elementary School already has QBT(Quiet Book Time) every day. They also have monthly themes. For October, they used the theme EFFORT and decided to concentrate their effort on QBT reading. They chose football for a theme to tie it all together. They held an assembly and invited high school cheerleaders and football players to talk to the kids about effort and to share their favorite books. Throughout the month each class is setting QBT goals of how much time they will spend reading. Classes that reach their weekly goals will make a first down, second down, third down, and at the end of the month a touchdown. On the last day of October, they will celebrate with a victory party. They are hoping to have Indiana University football mascots come celebrate with them. ... [Read More]

State & Regional Diversity Outreach - Highlight Report September 2001 - DOT HS 809-339
Networking with minority organizations was a key to the success of the South Carolina minority outreach effort. In November, a meeting was held with 200 representatives of the Coalition of Black Church Leaders on the Click It or Ticket Campaign. In May 2001, the state conducted a minority forum on seat belts. Thirty-five representatives from the NAACP, Coalition of Black Church Leaders, Black Legislative Caucus, Nation of Islam, Baptist Convention, Masons and Eastern Stars, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the National Council of Negro Women attended the program on "Click It or Ticket and the Minority Community - What does It Mean to You?" A black public relations firm, C & S Consulting, coordinated this program. A speaker's bureau of law enforcement officers conducted presentations in high schools throughout a targeted 16-county area (with high minority population). More than 20 predominately black schools were visited by uniformed officers carrying the safety belt message; the officers ... [Read More]

As part of NHTSA’s diversity outreach program to African Americans, NHTSA partnered with BET to produce public service announcements that aired on BET during the fall of 1999. The first PSA featured former Secretary Slater and Curtis Symonds, BET’s Vice President for Affiliate Markets , shaking hands and urging African Americans to join the partnership, with the message "Safety is a promise we make and keep together." The message premiered on BET’s evening news program in late October. The other three PSAs featured the former Secretary urging African Americans to use seat belts, to abstain from impaired driving, and to always place children in a child safety seat in the rear seat of a vehicle. BET aired these latter three PSAs during the halftime shows of Historically Black College & University football games with an estimated 56 million cable viewers watching. ... [Read More]

State of the Agriculture Economy
The Agriculture Committee responded in the last Congress to rapidly falling market prices and natural disasters by providing $6 billion to producers. It was a much needed infusion into the agricultural sector, but if export markets remain weak, it will be increasingly difficult for Congress to pass additional large ticket aid packages. In my view, we need to find other ways in which we can help our producers. I believe strongly that we need to overhaul in a major way, Federal crop insurance and risk management programs that currently I think in today's agricultural economy are dramatically lacking. ...
