Hall of Fame
On November 11 th , 1921 Roy Eiker answered a request published in the Keith County News for a need to reorganize the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department. Roy, and nine other "citizens", paid one dollar for dues and continued on with a Department that had been established in 1913. From the beginning Eiker was active in the Department and filled in where ever he was needed. On January 8 th , 1925 during a meeting at Ogallala Power Plant, Roy was appointed to serve on a committee that was placed in charge of purchasing "3 slickers, 3 pairs of boots and a dozen mittens" for members. One of Roy’s first jobs with the department was a "spanner" in 1925. He was later elected 2 nd Assistant Chief in 1929 and moved to "hydrant man" in 1930. Roy was first elected secretary in 1931. Ogallala is served by a main line of the Union Pacific Railroad. Interstate 80, located within the city limits, provides easy access to area communities and metropolitan cities. U.S. Highways 30 (east-west) and 26 (northwest) as well as Nebraska Highway 61 (north-south) intersect in Ogallala. Interstate I-76 is 26 miles west of Ogallala. Greyhound Bus Lines provides daily service to Ogallala with both westbound and eastbound buses. Bus charter service is also available. The Ogallala Cemetery was developed in early 1886, the first burials occurring in February of that year. In approximately 1890 , remains were transferred from the " Boot Hill " Cemetery ( located on a hill at that time above the city of Ogallala ) . On September 23, 2001, the Ogallala Police Department received Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation from the Police Chief Association of Nebraska. The Police Chief Association accreditation program is dedicated to advancing police administration, fostering cooperation and enhancing expertise among police administrators throughout Nebraska. The accreditation standards for law enforcement agencies contain one hundred seventy-eight standards.
