The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is a Historically Black University and a Land Grant Institution. It is the only institution of higher learning in the Virgin Islands and serves not only the U. S. Virgin Islands but also other Caribbean islands including Anguilla, Antigua, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Martin, and Trinidad. UVI is a small liberal arts, public, coed institution with a total enrollment of 2898 students. Of the total in the fall 1997, approximately 80 percent were black. The student body is predominantly Black and predominately female (75 percent). The UVI is cognizant of its role in the Virgin Islands community, which is overwhelmingly Black with a significant Hispanic component on St, Croix. Girls Sports
Greg Mobley, a therapist at the Villa Maria Treatment Center near Baltimore, Maryland, has foundexercise and physical activity interventions more successful if they are coeducational. The exercisetraining has had a positive effect on other programs at the center. He reports that exercise and sportprovides the adolescent girls with improved body image and that they are more relaxed and cooperativein group therapy sessions. ... During the nineteenth century, health reformers and educators included “female gymnastics,”walking, riding and dancing as key components of young women’s education (Vertinsky, 1994). In thecountryside and towns, archery, tennis, bicycling, ice boating, roller skating, croquet, golf and dancebecame popular among girls and women. A “new model of able-bodied womanhood” emerged, whichchallenged traditional notions about female frailty and ladylike behavior (Verbrugge, 1988, p. 196). Theintegration of exercise and athletic activity into school curricula expanded during the twentieth century.Recreational athletics for girls became popular in the form of “play days” between 1920 and 1950 andcompetitive varsity sports such as basketball and track and field multiplied after World War II (Hult,1994).
