BHPR - The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is a Historically Black University and a Land Grant Institution. It is the only institution of higher learning in the Virgin Islands and serves not only the U. S. Virgin Islands but also other Caribbean islands including Anguilla, Antigua, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Martin, and Trinidad. UVI is a small liberal arts, public, coed institution with a total enrollment of 2898 students. Of the total in the fall 1997, approximately 80 percent were black. The student body is predominantly Black and predominately female (75 percent). The UVI is cognizant of its role in the Virgin Islands community, which is overwhelmingly Black with a significant Hispanic component on St, Croix. Girls Sports Greg Mobley, a therapist at the Villa Maria Treatment Center near Baltimore, Maryland, has foundexercise and physical activity interventions more successful if they are coeducational. The exercisetraining has had a positive effect on other programs at the center. He reports that exercise and sportprovides the adolescent girls with improved body image and that they are more relaxed and cooperativein group therapy sessions. ...
