Access barriers to services include lack of access to hospital care because of geographic isolation, the lack of sufficient medical personnel and a highly mobile rural population, which results in treatment at different hospitals in the region. Of the 22 counties served by the CMPI project, 17 are designated in whole or in part as either a Medically Underserved Area and/or a Health Professional Shortage Area. Several cancer centers existed in the late 1960s, but it was the National Cancer Act of 1971 that strengthened the program by authorizing the establishment of 15 new cancer centers while continuing to support existing ones. The passage of the Act also dramatically transformed the centers’ structure and broadened the scope of their mission to include all aspects of basic, clinical , and cancer control research. Today, 60 NCI-designated cancer centers continue to work toward creating new and innovative approaches to cancer research.
