The NCI Cancer Centers Program, Cancer Facts 1.2 Several cancer centers existed in the late 1960s, but it was the National Cancer Act of 1971 that strengthened the program by authorizing the establishment of 15 new cancer centers while continuing to support existing ones. The passage of the Act also dramatically transformed the centers’ structure and broadened the scope of their mission to include all aspects of basic, clinical , and cancer control research.
