1) The steep ridges of the Appalachian Highlands presented a challenge to the fragile automobiles of early Lincoln Highway travelers, creating a unique opportunity to entrepreneurs who set up ridge-top, one-stop service centers that provided food, gas, lodging, water, scenic views and diversion to motorists struggling to cross the mountains.
