Montana's Statewide Land Evaluation and Site Assessment System | Montana NRCS The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Montana adopted a Statewide Land Evaluation and Site Assessment (LESA) System as of June 20, 2003. The Statewide LESA System is used to rank and prioritize proposals for the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) in Montana. The Montana Statewide LESA System uses soil and site-related criteria to provide comprehensive evaluations of the relative merits offered by individual FRPP proposals. Statewide LESA was developed and tested over the past one and one-half years through the efforts of an ad-hoc committee composed of USDA employees and land-trust organizations throughout Montana. Additionally, the draft criteria were reviewed by the State Technical Advisory Committee and producer interest groups in Montana prior to the finalization and formal recognition of this system. Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program | Montana NRCS In 2004, NRCS awarded funds totaling $2,221,200 to qualified entities that will be used solely for the acquisition of conservation easements on 13,214 acres of farm and ranch lands in Montana. Using funds from the FRPP, these conservation easements will protect 9,422 acres of Montana's prime, unique, or statewide or locally important soils. In Lewis and Clark County, NRCS is working with the Prickly Pear Land Trust to acquire 1,900 acres of land bordering Lake Helena and containing portions of Ten Mile Creek, Prickly Pear Creek, and Silver Creek. In Cascade County, NRCS is working with The Conservation Fund to acquire 652 acres of land along the Missouri River. This acquisition will be added to the 661 acres acquired in 2003 to form a continuous unit.
