Earthquake Hazards Program: Earthquake History of Montana The largest earthquake in Montana'shistory was the magnitude 7.1 Hebgen Lake earthquake of August 17, 1959.At 11:37 p.m., MountainStandard Time, the earth beneathHebgen Lake suddenly warped androtated, generating a seiche thatcontinued for about 11 1/2 hours. The firstfew waves were over 1 meter in height,large enough to flow over HebgenDam, a concrete core earthfill structurethat was completed in 1914.Although the dam's concrete corewallcracked in 16 places, only a minoramount of seepage occurred.
