Western Uniformity Scenario Analysis Chapter 2 - Scenario Description
(2) A commercial motor vehicle combination with two or more cargo-carrying units not included in descriptions “truck tractor and two trailer units” or “truck tractor and three trailer units.” ...

The scenario also includes the triple-trailer combination. A typical triple consists of a two- or three-axle truck-tractor towing three trailers. Each trailer is usually 28- to 28.5-feet in length. Of the 13 States in the study, only Washington and Wyoming do not currently allow triples. Nebraska allows only empty triples on a very limited network. 8 ... [Read More]

1 COMMISSIONER ROWE: I get to introduce once again, Nan
MR. STRAND: I guess I interpret that moreas a comment than a question, but I would agree with the comment. You know,Montana is primarily an agricultural-based state, and what you find isin an area with ten farmers or ranchers one may be doing quite well andthe other nine not so well. The one that's doing well can see opportunitiesto use the Internet, for example, to help his business and is willing topay the cost of DSL; the other nine are too busy spending their money ontractor parts and fertilizer and pesticides, etc., and don't have an additional$40, $50, $60 a month to spend for DSL, and it's a real concern for us.So it's something I think that the policymakers have to keep in mind asthey whip us forward into deploying broadband. We're doing it as fast aswe can, but please be aware that we are on the bleeding edge here, andthe demand is slow to develop for these services. ... [Read More]

NASD: Tractor Accident Victim Rescue
If a tractor without ROPS overturns, it may be easier to rescue the victim from under the tractor by digging. Soft soil conditions may allow rescuers to dig the victim free. Blocking and cribbing are extremely important to prevent settling or additional turning of the tractor. This might endanger rescuers as well as cause additional injury to the victim. Before digging, make sure the tractor has been completely stabilized with cribbing, and the rear wheels chocked so they cannot turn. ... [Read More]

NASD: Power Take-Off Accident Victim Rescue
Power take-off shafts generally vary with the size of the tractor. Those on larger tractors usually turn at 1,000 revolutions per minute (RPM), and those on smaller units run at 540 RPM. This means that a person caught in a PTO drive unit that turns at 540 revolutions per minute, conceivably could be whipped around the shaft nine times per second. If the power take-off drive unit turns at 1,000 RPM, a person caught in it could turn at a speed of 16 2/3 times per second. If the weight of th person caught in a PTO shaft did not cause a slow operating tractor engine to stall, the accident could be totally devastating. The power take-off shafts on most irrigation pump drive line systems turn at even higher rates than the 1,000-revolution PTO shaft on tractors. ... [Read More]

Federal Size Regulations for Commercial Motor Vehicles - FHWA
The minimum allowable length limit for the semitrailer in this combination is 14.63 m (48 feet) or the grandfathered limit for a particular State. (See discussion of Grandfathered Semitrailer Lengths on page 3.) A State may not impose an overall vehicle length limit on a truck tractor-semitrailer combination operating on the NN or reasonable access routes, even if the trailer is longer than the minimum length required by Federal law (Figure 2). A State may not impose an overall length limit on a truck tractor pulling a single semitrailer or a limit on the distance between the axles of such a truck tractor. ... [Read More]

Western Uniformity Scenario Analysis- Chapter 6 Roadway Geometry
Low-Speed Offtracking occurs when a combination vehicle makes a low-speed turn - for example a 90-degree turn at an intersection - and the wheels of the rearmost trailer axle follow a path several feet inside the path of the tractor steering axle. Figure VI-1 illustrates low-speed offtracking in a 90-degree turn for a tractor-semitrailer. Excessive low-speed offtracking makes it necessary for the driver to swing wide into adjacent lanes when making a turn to avoid climbing inside curbs, striking curbside fixed objects or other vehicles. On an exit ramp excessive offtracking can result in the truck tracking inward onto the shoulder or up over inside curbs. For single trailer combinations, this performance attribute is affected primarily by the distance of the tractor kingpin 18 ... [Read More]
