Glacier National Park, Montana
Glacier National Park is named for the glaciers that produced its landscape. A glacier is a moving mass of snow and ice. It forms when more snow falls each winter than melts in the summer. The snow accumulates and presses the layers below it into ice. The bottom layer of ice becomes flexible and therefore allows the glacier to move. As it moves, a glacier picks up rock and gravel. With this mixture of debris, it scours and sculptures the land it moves across. This is how, over thousands of years, Glacier National Park got all its valleys, sharp mountain peaks, and lakes. There are more than 50 glaciers in the park today, though they are smaller than the huge ones that existed 20,000 years ago. ... [Read More]

Glacier monitoring in Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park has approximately 50 small glaciers. Some of theseglaciers are relatively well known, having attracted the scientific attention of the firstpark advocates in 1887. Only 37 named glaciers existed in 1968 which met USGS criteria asperennial snow-ice masses larger than 0.1 km 2 . Ground measurements of glaciermargins and termini were made sporadically on several glaciers by the National ParkService, U.S. Geological Survey, and several universities but ended by 1979. Nocomprehensive park-wide glacier monitoring program was ever established but excellentsummaries by Johnson (1980) and Carrara (1989) focused on available data for themost-studied glaciers. The glaciers have receded since they were first described in 1901,and tree-ring studies indicate that glacial retreat began about 1850. At that time therewere more than 150 glaciers within Glacier National Park. ... [Read More]
