Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer Nancy Peterson, 49 will serve as the Director of Agriculture. Born in Havre and raised south of Gildford, Peterson has carried on her family’s tradition in farming and ranching. She currently farms over 2,600 acres north of Havre. Peterson has over 30 years of experience as a farm owner/operator for corporations, partnerships and sole proprietors, including all areas of FSA farm programs, NRCS, crop/farm insurance, oil and gas leasing, farm loan applications, farm credit and all aspects of hands-on labor of operating a family farm. Peterson independently operated a private grain laboratory in Havre for two years and worked as a relief agent for Amtrak in Havre, Shelby and Wolf Point. She has been involved with Montana Grain Grower’s Association, Montana Farmer’s Union and Montana Certified Seed Association. Montana Department of Commerce The City of Havre and Hill County will both receive grants from the Montana Department of Commerce totaling almost $1 million. The City will receive $500,000 to address problems with the municipal water system; and the County will use their $450,750 award to replace three bridges that span Sage Creek. “It’s often hard to see all the hard work from local officials that goes on behind the scenes to make a grant like this happen, but it is important to remember that here in state government we are building on the initial efforts, and funding, from the City of Havre and Hill County,” Governor Brian Schweitzer said. ... Montana - Sober & Safe A community committee was formed to address the problem of increasing alcohol-related fatalities around the winter holidays. The committee included the Hill County Sheriff, the Havre Police Chief, the Coroner, a funeral director, local business owners, the Tavern Association, Havre Ford, Cellular One, and the community prevention organization. Committee members worked together to develop a program to address the problem and implement fun activities intended to help decrease alcohol-related fatalities. The locally developed logo (picturing several dogs in a car, with the driving dog saying, “I love you guys, so I drive.”), and the locally differentiated program name (“Sober & Safe”) provided the necessary themes. The logo and theme were placed on billboards, in media spots, on drink mugs, etc., to get the message out to the public.
