Anyone who wants to run in the primary election as a member of a qualified political party must file with the Secretary of State’s Office anytime between 8 a.m. on January 26 and 5 p.m. on March 25, 2004. If you are interested in running as an independent or as a representative of a party that has not qualified for the ballot in Montana, please contact the Secretary of State's toll-free voter hotline at 1-888-884-VOTE (8683) for more information.   If you are interested in running for president, please contact our Election Bureau at (406) 444-5346 or P.O. About the State Seal
The Great Seal of the State of Montana is a vivid symbol ofall that is special about Big Sky Country. Originally designed in 1865, it features a plow and aminer’s pick and shovel to illustrate the state’s agricultural and mineralwealth. These are surrounded by the mountains for which Montana was named, aswell as by the Great Falls of the Missouri River, which so dazzled explorersLewis and Clark. The motto, Oro y Plata , is Spanish for “gold andsilver,” two of the riches that gave rise to the nickname Treasure State. The original designers of the seal were members of alegislative committee chaired by Francis M. Thompson in the days when Montanawas still a territory. Thompson was not without some expertise: he had engravedseals for Montana’s first mining districts on the ends of ax handles. Thecommittee wanted to incorporate into the design the essential elements ofMontana’s economy and its natural attributes.
