Tupelo National Battlefield (National Park Service) In the spring of 1864, Major General William Sherman prepared his army to take Atlanta and susequently "march to the sea". A primary concern of Sherman's was Major General Nathan Forrest's Confederate corp of mounted infantry roving the mid-South. Sherman ordered several advances from Federally controlled Memphis into north Mississippi for the purpose of keeping Forrest in Mississippi and not behind Sherman, cutting communication and supply lines. On July 13-15, 1864, the battle of Tupelo was the result of one of those advances by Major General Andrew J. Smith. WAM008 - Feasibility of Establishing a Farmers' Market in Tupelo, Mississippi Farmers in northeast Mississippi have experienced low farm income and financial difficulties during recent years.Some of these difficulties have been attributed to lower commodity prices for crops typically grown in the area; theproduction of fruits and vegetables may offer an attractive alternative. Lack of post-harvest marketing facilities andadequate infrastructure for marketing are major barriers to increasing commercial fruit and vegetable production in thearea. This report explores the feasibility of a new Tupelo farmers' market to partly meet this need for marketingfacilities.Different groups were surveyed to determine their potential use of a new Tupelo farmers' market. Wholesale firms expressed interest in purchasing produce on such a market. Previous studies and population data indicate a potentialconsumer market for growers using the new market. National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services I wanted to share with you the findings from the most recent meeting of the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services on September 12-14th, 2004 in Tupelo, Mississippi. The Committee is continuing work on its 2005 report and the opportunity to do site visits and meet with local health care and human service providers is essential to the development of the report. In Tupelo, the Committee also heard from several key Mississippi representatives during the meeting. Dr. Edward Hill, incoming President of the American Medical Association and a local practitioner in Tupelo, shared with the Committee his interest in promoting comprehensive school health education in the schools. Dr. Hill also discussed with the Committee his early work in the Delta region delivering obstetrical care through an interdisciplinary team-based approach that has important relevance for rural underserved communities. Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail (National Park Service) There is currently 63 miles of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail open for use in four areas along the Natchez Trace Parkway. At the northern end of the Parkway there is 24 miles of trail within the Leipers Fork district, near Franklin, Tennessee, extending from the Garrison Creek parking area (milepost 427.6), south to Tennessee Highway 50 (milepost 408). The Tupelo district in Tupelo, Mississippi, has 7 miles of trail open for use extending from the Beech Springs parking area (milepost 266) to Chickasaw Village (milepost 261.8). The Ridgeland district, near Ridgeland, Mississippi, has 22 miles of trail open for use extending from the Yockanookany pull-off and Picnic Area (milepost 131), south to the West Florida Boundary (milepost 108). Near Port Gibson, Mississippi, the Rocky Springs section of trail in the Port Gibson district, has 10 miles open for use extending from the Regantown road trailhead (milepost 59), south to Russell Road (milepost 50.8).
