In collaboration with the University of Southern Mississippi’s  Gulf Coast Geospatial Center , NOAA/Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS)  and NOAA/National Geodetic Survey (NGS)  are establishing a long-term water level station and Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) in Ocean Springs, MS this week. The requirement for this station became evident at the original workshop of the FY2003 NOS Partnership between the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM), CO-OPS and NGS entitled, “Application of Water Level and Datum Information to Coastal Zone Management: Boundary Delineations and Habitat Restoration.” By linking a CORS station with a long-term water level station, there are many applications that will be supported, such as long-term subsidence measurements, relative sea level trends assessments, storm surge monitoring [from hurricanes and other coastal storms], shoreline change, and habitat restora ... The National Ocean Service (NOS) operates one long-term continuously operating tide station in the state of Mississippi that provides data and information on tidal datums and relative sea level trends, and is capable of producing real-time data for storm surge warning. This station is located at Waveland. A new long-term station is planned for installation at Ocean Springs during FY05, a cooperative station with NGS to monitor long-term subsidence and sea level changes. For additional information about the National Water Level Observation Network, please visit: http://www.co-ops.nos.noaa.gov . ... [Read More]

CDRP - Funded Institutions - Singing River Hospital System
The Singing River Hospital System (SRHS) began in 1931 as Jackson County Hospital. The facility was the first community owned and operated hospital in Mississippi, and had 23 beds. Several additions to the hospital took place until, in 1958, a new 122-bed hospital was built and opened, and renamed Singing River Hospital. In 1968, the hospital system concept was created to include Ocean Springs Hospital in Ocean Springs Mississippi. SRHS has evolved steadily and significantly over the years. Singing River Hospital now has 415 beds and Ocean Springs hospital has 126 beds. The total of 541 beds makes SRHS one of the largest hospital systems in the state and Gulf Coast region. The Regional Cancer Center (RCC) opened in 1994 on the Singing River Hospital campus, brining cancer care to the area for the first time. The hospital system also has a Level II Trauma Center, a strong cardiac program, including open-heart surgery, a hospice, two ambulatory surgery centers, and many other ancillary ... [Read More]

in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to launch an NOS Partnership Project titled "Application of Water Level Information to Coastal Zone Management." NOS will install and maintain two tide gauges in Alabama and Mississippi at locations chosen by state coastal resource managers to showcase the use of water-level information for such purposes as habitat restoration, wetland mitigation, measurement of land subsidence, and boundary delineation. Data from the gauges will be collected for one year, and the information will be used to support state coastal management decision-making. The results will be disseminated to coastal managers nationwide. For more information, contact ... [Read More]
