I, Haley Barbour, Governor of the State of Mississippi, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Mississippi do hereby establish the "Mississippi Military Communities Council" to advise executive and legislative officials of the State of Mississippi regarding the ongoing efforts by the U.S. Department of Defense to close, realign, restructure, streamline, or otherwise take actions that would impact military installations located within the State. Pea Ridge National Military Park (National Park Service)
Pea Ridge National Military Park is a 4,300 acre Civil War Battlefield that preserves the site of the March 1862 battle that saved Missouri for the Union. On March 7 & 8, nearly 26,000 soldiers fought to determine whether Missouri would remain under Union control, and whether or not Federal armies could continue their offensive south through the Mississippi River Valley. Major General Earl Van Dorn led 16,000 Confederates against 10,250 Union soldiers, under the command of Brigadier General Samuel R. Curtis. Van Dorn's command consisted of regular Confederate troops commanded by Brigadier General Benjamin McCulloch, and Missouri State Guard Forces commanded by Major General Sterling Price. The Confederate force also included some 800 Cherokees fighting for the Confederacy. The Union army consisted of soldiers from Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Ohio. In 2004, the 172d Airlift Wing will receive six C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. At an estimated cost of $200 million each, these aircraft will replace the division’s aging fleet of C-141B Starlifters, most of which were built in the late 1960's. Many parts for the Starlifter have become obsolete and the Guard Wing’s outstanding maintenance crew has been forced to make vital plane components from scrap materials. The Congressman stated that "These new highly technologically advanced C-17's, with their increased range, ability to cruise at higher speeds and carry more payload, will enhance the Guard’s capacity significantly and prove to be an invaluable resource to the state of Mississippi." ...
