The Davis Timber Company site is approximately six milesnorthwest of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in Lamar County. Thefacility has been a timber processing and wood preservingoperation. Operations included bark removal, treatment withpentachlorophenol, and product storage. The company beganoperations in 1966 as a producer of untreated poles at anothernearby location. The plant began treating operations at thepresent location in 1972, using pentachlorophenol as a woodpreservative ( 1 ). The treatment operations were discontinued in1987 due to state regulatory actions ( 2 ). Davis Timber Companyclosed in 1990 and Lamar Wood Products continued previousoperations, which did not include chemical wood treatment. Themain source of contamination from the Davis Timber Companyfacility was a waste-water treatment holding pond that wasdesigned as an evaporation pond. The golf course has been inoperation for twenty-seven years and is typically irrigated withwater from a spring or a wet-weather pond. During drought, thepond would become dry, and water would be taken from Country ClubLake to fill the wet-weather pond. Golf course management drewwater from Country Club Lake for irrigation purposes, for anunknown length of time until 1982. Between 1982-86, water wasnot drawn from the lake. Jitney-Jungle Stores of America, Inc
The Federal Trade Commission has reached a settlement agreement in connection with the merger of Jitney-Jungle Stores of America, Inc. and Delchamps, Inc. that the agency says will keep supermarket prices competitive in the Gulfport-Biloxi, Hattiesburg and Vicksburg areas of Mississippi, and in the Pensacola area of Florida. The settlement would resolve the FTC charges that Jitney-Jungle's $228 million acquisition of outstanding Delchamps shares would violate antitrust laws by substantially reducing competition among supermarket operators in those areas. To restore competition, the settlement would require Jitney-Jungle to divest a total of 10 supermarkets to Supervalu Inc.
