ARS-OI Biotechnology-Aquaculture Workshop
Many types of molecular markers have been developed in catfish. Low levels of polymorphism and lack of correlation with phenotypes negates the use of isozyme markers in catfish selective breeding (Dunham and Smitherman, 1984; Hallerman et al., 1986; Carmichael et al., 1992). Anonymous DNA markers such as amplified fragment length polymorphisms and random amplified polymorphic DNA markers were developed in catfish (Liu et al. 1998a, 1998b). These are dominant markers that reveal genomic variation between blue and channel catfish, but low levels of variation within channel catfish limits their use in applied genomics. The most useful molecular markers for catfish genome analysis are microsatellites, which demonstrate high levels of allelic polymorphism within and between strains and families. To date, researchers at the USDA-ARS Catfish Genetics Research Unit and the Auburn University Fish Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology Laboratory have published 390 catfish microsatellite markers ( ... CATFISH CLEARED FOR PROCESSING AND SHIPPING
REISSUED TO CLARIFY POINTS IN PARAGRAPH 2 AND 3 T97-35 Lawrence Bachorik: (301) 827-6242July 25, 1997 Consumer Hotline: (800) 532-4440 CATFISH CLEARED FOR PROCESSING AND SHIPPING FDA today informed catfish growers and processors whose fishhad consumed feed from five feedmills inadvertently contaminatedwith dioxin that they may immediately resume processing andshipping catfish. This action is based on newly available dataon composite catfish samples from three states (Arkansas,Louisiana and Mississippi) showing that dioxin levels in thesamples are below the level of concern. FDA believes that the quick and successful resolution ofthis issue is due, in large part, to actions it took earlier thismonth to stop the shipment and use of contaminated feed. Haltingthe use of the contaminated feed, and the rapid growth of pondraised-catfish at this time of year, contributed significantly toreducing the levels of dioxin in the catfish that were sampledand tested and which are now coming to market ... He is currently conducting research on oxygen management in warmwater aquaculture ponds.   His current research involves 1) the effect(s) of aerator set-points on growth, feed consumption and production of channel catfish, 2) the effect of aerator placement on water quality and production economics in large (15-acre) commercial ponds, and 3) development and testing of a new aerator design for use in warmwater ponds. He is also participating in a collaborative project comparing production of blue catfish, blue X channel hybrid catfish, and three lines of channel catfish in 0.1, 0.25 and 1.0-acre ponds. ... Catfish Genetics Research : Home
The primary research emphasis is genetic improvement of catfish leading to the development and release of improved germplasm to commercial producers and solving water quality problems limiting production and affecting catfish flavor quality. The release of the NWAC103 catfish line was completed in early 2002 and has been the major impact from unit research.  The breeding program now implements a multi-trait selection program with the goal of improving multiple traits simultaneously in a catfish line.  In summary the major issues are: 1) continue to improve and obtain performance documentation on the unit's improved catfish lines selected for multiple traits (growth, disease resistance, processing yield, and reproductive performance), 2) document performance and impact of NWAC103 line released to commercial producers and provide technology support, 3) continue to increase the number of genetic markers on the unit's high-density genetic linkage map and identify marker ...
