HUD's Daily Message - May 12, 2003
The Mississippi Office staff provided all of the 'goodies,' and also would pay to ship the baskets overseas and to bases here in America. Every basket was filled with essentials, including toiletries, lip balm, and socks; motivational booklets; and plenty of fun stuff: cookies, crackers, beef jerky, hard candy, gum and chocolate. The baskets were wrapped in a cellophane bag - tied at the top with red, white and blue ribbon - and carefully packed in a shipping box. Larger items like 'stateside' quality toilet paper were added as packing material (and an unaccustomed luxury for men and women living in the desert with minimal creature comforts). Finally, each box had a card that said, "I'm such a lucky dog! Thanks again." and signed "Your HUD Family" with an American Flag pin attached. ... [Read More]

FEMA: News Bits - Upcoming Mississippi Mayors Flood Summit
Mississippi Mayors Flood Summit: Helping Flooded Communities Help Themselves will be held August 23-24 in Davenport, Iowa. This special regional workshop is designed for elected officials and staff persons who need to know what can be done to help their communities affected by flooding along the Mississippi River, and to keep it from happening again. Participants will hear how the spring 2001 flooding compares with other significant floods, about experiences and success stories of other communities, and about the options and alternatives for flood mitigation planning to help them become more sustainable in times of flooding. A "white paper" describing flood management policies in terms of recent events and mitigation strategies is being prepared for distribution at the workshop. Discussion facilitators will seek consensus among participants on recommendations and call for action.
