Rod Paige, Department of Education Secretary
Secretary Paige became the superintendent of schools ofHISD in 1994. As superintendent, Secretary Paige created the Peer Examination,Evaluation, and Redesign (PEER) program, which solicits recommendations frombusiness and community professionals for strengthening school support servicesand programs. He launched a system of charter schools that have broad authorityin decisions regarding staffing, textbooks, and materials. He saw to it thatHISD paid teachers salaries competitive with those offered by other large Texasschool districts. The Strawberry Capital of the World and the Prairie Cajun Capital of the World were both visited by the Louisiana Music Cavalcade Saturday, March 23 in a doubleheader performance by the Cavalcade entertainers. First stop was the Strawberry Jam 'n Toast to the Arts, a Ponchatoula festival in its second year. Secretary of State W. Fox McKeithen was on hand to present Ponchatoula native Irma Thomas with a certificate proclaiming Irma Thomas Day in Louisiana. The festival format featured more than 65 acts on nine stages across Ponchatoula. The Louisiana Music Cavalcade Band led the performers on the Synergy Home Health Stage early Saturday afternoon. Gibson guitar craftsman Luke Thompson joined the band on stage for the duration of the performance. Thompson is a renown mandolin player and has been involved in Louisiana music for decades.
