Monthly Report - Native American Liaison Foundation Provides Grant to support Youth Fishing Day at Minnesota ValleyNational Wildlife Refuge: The Minneapolis Foundation was briefed on NationalFishing Week and Native American involvement in the MN Valley NCR YouthFishing Day event. The Foundation has been in contact with the Red Lake tribalrepresentative who was given a video and information to reflect the variety of ethniccultures participating in the Youth Fishing Day event. Collaboration on the grantrequest resulted in a generous financial donation to the Friends of Minnesota Valley.The funds are dedicated to the purchase of fishing rods and reels that will be used bythe inner city youth during the National Fishing Week event scheduled for June 3,2000. Participation by the Foundation was critical since budgetary cutbacks at theBureau of Indian Affairs reduced their ability to support the event as they have in thepast. America's National Wildlife Refuge System The following wildlife refuges are proposed to be added to list of units open for hunting and/or fishing: Cahaba River in Alabama, Stone Lakes in California, Stewart B. McKinney in Connecticut, Assabet River in Massachusetts, Glacial Ridge in Minnesota, and Silvio O. Conte in New Hampshire. The Service is also proposing to expand hunting and fishing opportunities at seven wildlife refuges. Interior Activity & Accomplishments More than 300 Inner City Youths, Adults Introduced to Joys of Fishing at Minnesota Valley (FWS): More than 150 diverse kids from the inner city neighborhoods of Minneapolis and St. Paul joined members of the Red Lake Nation, Bureau of Indian Affairs and USFWS staff for a day of fishing at Minnesota Valley NWR, June 8, 2002. The morning was dedicate to youth-only fishing, and included instruction on fishing techniques, education about fishery conservation efforts and time actually spent fishing. All participants and staff volunteers were treated to a lunch provided by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. All of the kids were provided a new fishing rod and associated tackle as part of this event. The afternoon open-fishing session was attended by an estimated 150 kids and adults from the Twin Cities area. This Fishing Day event for inner-city youth has occurred every year since 1990. FRB: Beige Book - Minneapolis In late spring, the Ninth District economy continues to enjoy moderate growth in most sectors with few economic problems reported by any source. Construction firms describe a fifth consecutive busy season, with strong residential and heavy construction reported in many areas. Retail sales of general merchandise and vehicles are brisk according to most reports, and summer tourism and recreation business is apparently off to a good start. Manufacturing firms continue to report good sales with few supply bottlenecks. Iron mining and oil production are strong, while forest product output is largely steady. Although crop planting and development have been somewhat retarded, the overall outlook is favorable. Beef producers are receiving higher prices, bringing relief to beleaguered ranchers and their lenders. Hog prices have risen, with strong export demand and reduced numbers on farms, and some packers face difficulty in procuring enough hogs to keep slaughter lines running at capacity. Une ...
