genome.gov | DNA Kit and Science Museum Activities For the celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the description of the DNA double helix, The Science Museum of Minnesota [www.smm.org] with help from the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) [www.astc.org] and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), developed a kit designed for science centers and museums, providing them with DNA demonstrations and hands-on experiments involving genetics and genomics. ... Through an application process, 30 museums from 20 states nationwide were chosen to receive a kit. Each museum used the kit in a variety of ways including: outreach to school groups; use in learning camps; demonstrations at local sites; and in on-going workshops and classes for adults and children. ... Congressman Martin Olav Sabo -- On July 12, I introduced the Income Equity Act of 2005. I have long believed that the growing wage gap in our country is a big problem that we need to address. Wage disparities between high- and low-income households are the largest on record. My legislation would encourage companies to evaluate their pay scale with a focus on those paid the lowest wages. Please visit the Legislation/Issues section of the web site for more information on this important subject or scroll down to link to the press release. ... [Read More]
Science Education Partnership Awards for FY 2004 Program ENERGY's long-term goal is to reduce the rate of obesity and type 2 diabetes in elementary school students by teaching and reinforcing healthy behavior choices. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are epidemics among our children and effective, feasible, sustainable, outcomes-based prevention in children is needed and must be implemented in elementary schools over the next decade. An intervention of this type will protect the health and quality of life of children and, therefore, ensure the nation's productivity andcompetitiveness. Research has provided the data and tools necessary to prevent these diseases, but the missing link has been a flexible, successful, research-based prevention program that can be replicated in most U.S. classrooms. Program ENERGY will be developed with the intention of filling this gap, and has proven to be a successful and promising model. Our initial program is a science-inquiry learning enrichment program combining 90 minutes per week of classroom and phys ... [Read More]

NOAA's National Ocean Service: Hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico Nutrient over-enrichment from anthropogenic sources is one of the major stresses impacting coastal ecosystems. Generally, excess nutrients lead to increased algal production and increased availability of organic carbon within an ecosystem, a process known as eutrophication. There are multiple sources of excessive nutrients in watersheds, both point and non-point, and the transport and delivery of these nutrients is a complex process which is controlled by a range of factors. These include not only the chemistry, but also the ecology, hydrology, and geomorphology of the various portions of a watershed and that of the receiving system. Both the near-coastal hydrodynamics that generate water column stratification and the nutrients that fuel primary productivity contribute to the formation of hypoxic zones. Human activities on land can add excess nutrients to coastal areas or compromise the ability of ecosystems to remove nutrients either from the landscape or from the waterways themselves ...
