Abstract: This paper describes the benefits to local economies from the conservation and management of designated wildlife sites in Scotland, from other conservation-related policy measures and from the expenditures of visitors attracted by the wildlife resource. Three case-study areas are selected for the measurement of visitor-induced benefits (Orkney, Wester Ross and Highland Perthshire) and the direct, indirect and induced income and employment effects of visitor spending are quantified. Although the mean expenditure per visitor is highest in Orkney, due to a longer mean length of stay and a higher proportion of the expenditure that could be attributed to the wildlife attraction, the largest wildlife impact is in Highland Perthshire due to the higher number of visitors to the area. Thebrainchild of a Jewish volunteer who went from Minneapolis to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1993 tohelp with flood relief, this organization mobilized some 400 Jewish and Christian volunteersduring the 1997 and 1998 floods, tornadoes and heavy storms that ravaged the upper midwesternUnited States. Nechama's volunteers traveled more than 1,000 miles on two dozen deployments(sandbagging operations, for instance) to help families and communities defend themselves andtheir properties against impending disasters and recoverfrom natural disaster. Nechama also raised more than $50,000 to rebuild a synagogue in flood-torn Grand Forks, North Dakota, and to assist other flood relief efforts in the region.
