The Study included examination of morbidity (hospital discharge) and mortality statistics. Standardized Mortality Ratios were calculated for Battle Creek City and Calhoun County from theperiod 1976 through 1980. Age-adjusted mortality rates for Calhoun County, Battle Creek,Springfield, Emmett Township, Pennfield Township, Cass County, and Dowagiac, for 1970-1984were compared with statewide figures. Hospital discharge rate data for the Battle Creek area,Calhoun County, the Dowagiac area, and Cass County for 1982 and 1983 were compared withstatewide figures. The applicability of this data was limited because the data in general wascollected from relatively large areas and could not be extracted to focus strictly on the study andcontrol areas. Various owners and operators occupied the property from 1887 to 1990, and title tothe property reverted to the City of Battle Creek for unpaid taxes in 1996. A neighboringindustrial operation and a developer have separately expressed interest in the property. ... investigation in February 1994 found an estimated 132,000 tires on the K&M Salvage property. The buildings are also partially collapsed. The City of Battle Creek has condemned the buildings,ordering the company to remove the tires and demolish the buildings. The area of the property is served by the Battle Creek Municipal Water System, with no knownprivate wells in the area. The primary source for the Battle Creek Municipal Water System is theVerona Well Field, approximately 3 miles northeast of the AK Zinn property. The Verona WellField and private wells in that area have had a history of contamination with volatile organicchemicals including trichloroethylene, traced to sources in that vicinity and not related to thecontamination at the AK Zinn property. The Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Rivers are between theproperty and the Well Field, which should provide barriers to groundwater flow between theareas. The Municipal Water System, the U.S. EPA, the MDCH, and the MDEQ have been takingactions to ameliorate the contamination in the city's drinking water supply and the private wells ( 15 ). ...
