"I Remember . . ." - Reminiscences of the Great Depression
Christmas was an exciting time, but there were never too many gifts. I got a doll bed one year with a doll and aluminum dishes. It was the best Christmas I remember. (A couple of years later it dawned on me that my dad had made the bed.) We always had homemade candy and popcorn balls. The lights on the tree were very difficult. If one burned out, the whole string would go out. So there you were with a good bulb trying all the sockets until you found the burned-out one. When there was no money to buy extra bulbs, all you had to do was break the bulb, twist the wires and screw the bulb back in the socket, being very careful if you didn't get all the glass off.... ... ATSDR - Health Consultation - Mercury Spill Assist in Watervliet, Michigan, Watervliet, Berrien County, Michigan
A wall-mounted thermostat was determined to be the likely source of mercury contamination. Many wall-mounted thermostats, typically round dial models, contain a glass mercury bulb thatis mounted on a bi-metal tilt switch. This switch oscillates the furnace on or off as the mercurymoves from one end of the bulb (open) to the other (closed) with changes in temperature. Theresidents reported that on Wednesday, October 24, 2001, an electrician replaced the living roomthermostat. The mercury was discovered the following day, October 25, 2001, when the parentsobserved the 2-year-old boy, lying down on the chair and pushing a bead of mercury aroundwith his tongue. Closer inspection revealed many small mercury beads on the chair and thesurrounding carpet. The residents contacted the Poison Control Center (PCC), which advisedthem of the hazards of mercury inhalation , the importance of immediate ventilation, and cleanupmeasures. PCC also advised the residents to contact DEOE for on-site assi ... [Read More]

Michigan FACE Report No. 03MI020
Earlier during the day of the incident he told one of the other custodians that he was going to get the “bulb gripper” extension pole to change the light. These bulb changes were often done with a man lift. The victim knew he was not certified to use the man lift, because his lack of training had prevented him from using the lift on other jobs. He had another conversation around noon with the school athletic director during which he indicated he was going to have to get an extension ladder, because he was not able to change the light with the extension pole. The light he had been trying to change was a floodlight type bulb. The extension pole with a “bulb gripper” did not work, because the gripper was designed for typical standard light bulbs, not the floodlight type bulbs in use. After his fall, the extension pole was seen hanging on the wall in the custodian’s closet. ... [Read More]

MDCIS - Energy Office - Case Study 15
The T12 lights in the school are currently being changed over to T8 lights as the ballasts burn out. The lights are situated two bulbs per fixture and with the T12s there was one ballast for every fixture. In order to maximize the savings from a retrofit, Pat has been using electronic ballasts made to handle four bulbs. He then uses one ballast for two fixtures by running wire to the other fixture. This is cutting the number of ballasts in the school in half making the retrofit much more affordable. The four bulb ballasts also use less energy per bulb giving additional energy savings. The benefit of using the electronic ballasts required to run 32 Watt T8 bulbs over the magnetic ballasts which run 40 Watt T12 bulbs is not just a reduction in bulb wattage. The electronic ballasts themselves only take 1/4 to ½ of an amp to run compared with the magnetic ballasts which took 5 to 7 amps. The results are a large reduction in electric consumption in the school. ... [Read More]
