The State of Michigan is surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes--the world'slargest freshwater lakes. These Great Lakes constitute 90% of the country's fresh surfacewater, and about 20% of the world's fresh surface water. The Great Lakes are resources ofvital national importance; utilized for manufacturing, shipping, drinking, recreation, andtourism. Michigan has approximately 3,288 miles of Great Lakes coastline, more than 10,000inland lakes and ponds and is interwoven by a 35,000-mile web of freshwater rivers, streams, and wetlands. Accordingly, Michigan has more boat registrations than any otherstate in the country. It comes then as no surprise that disputes arise between those whowish to utilize these waters and those who own private land through which these watersflow. ... [Read More]

Michigan Island Light Station
In 1856, a Milwaukee contractor's crew came to the Apostle Islands with instructions to build a lighthouse. Plans originally called for the lighthouse to be built on Long Island, to guide ships to the port of LaPointe, on Madeline Island. However, for reasons that are not completely clear, a Lighthouse Service official ordered a last-minute change of plans, and the lighthouse was built on Michigan Island, instead. Made of rough stone, its exterior walls stuccoed and whitewashed, the new lighthouse combined a small, one-and-a-half-story keeper's dwelling with a low, conical light tower. ... [Read More]

Grosse Point Light Station National Historic Landmark Nomination
After completion of Grosse Point Light Station, a principal keeperand assistant were assigned to duty there. In its 67-year historyas a commissioned lighthouse, Grosse Point had ten principal keepers.Of these, the most notable was Edwin J. Moore who served at GrossePoint from 1888 to his death at the age of seventy-three in 1924.A stern and authoritarian man, he assumed the title of "Captain",instead of keeper, which was more descriptive of his leadershipstyle. Initially, there was only one assistant keeper but, withits increasing importance to the shipping industry, Grosse Pointcame to have two assistant keepers and a day laborer. In additionto maintaining the light and buildings, it was common for thesekeepers to work in tandem with the U.S. Life Saving Station atnearby Northwestern University. For example, in August of 1885the schooner Jamaica sprung a leak in the middle of LakeMichigan. Her captain steered the ailing vessel toward GrossePoint but stranded it on the shoa ... [Read More]
