Small Business Administration Fred Curtis, Jr. started working full time at his father’s company in 1991 at the age of 21 when total sales were approximately $1 million. Under his leadership Curtis has made periodic capital investments and refinements to its manufacturing systems, including the company’s major expansion in 1995 when Curtis acquired and renovated their manufacturing facility using SBA’s 504/Certified Development Loan Program. The project total was $1 million with Banknorth Massachusetts providing the first mortgage and SBA the second mortgage. The loan enabled Curtis to manufacture its products from “soup to nuts” onsite and to significantly diversify its product line. At the time the 504 project was approved, Curtis employed 62 and generated revenues of $5.5 million; since then the number of employees has skyrocketed to 220 and revenues to $44 million – a phenomenal 249% increase in the number of employees and 700% increase in revenues since 1995! ...
