Quincy District Court Domestic Violence Prevention Program
Winner of a 1992 Innovations in American Government Award sponsored by the Ford Foundation and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. This program has been cited as a model by the Harvard School of Public Health and praised by the Women's Legislative Caucus. Court staff have developed a special probation protocol for the supervision of batterers, which has been adopted by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) as a resource for the National Institute of Corrections. The number of abusers placed in supervised protection has risen from 35 in 1986 to 200 in 1992; more probationers are surrendered for violations; and three times as many male batterers are completing the yearlong intensive treatment program in Quincy than in other jurisdictions. Best of all, Quincy had no domestic homicides in 1991. Since the program began in 1987, the number of women seeking orders from the Quincy Court has doubled. ... [Read More]
