One of the six New England states, and one of the first 13 states in the Union (it entered in 1788), Massachusetts is known as the "Old Colony State." The Pilgrims established their settlement at Plymouth in 1620, arriving on the Mayflower . They were followed shortly by the Puritans, who established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Puritans named their colony after a local Indian tribe whose name means "a large hill place." The birthplace of many of the ideals of the American Revolution, Massachusetts attracted people who believed in self-government. Massachusetts Bay Cruise
Despite the rain and snow on February 15 and 16, cruise number 32 of the Mass Bay Long-Term Study was successfully completed aboard the USCG Cutter Marcus Hanna . The project, jointly funded by the USGS and the Massachusetts Water Resources Association (MWRA), has maintained moorings to measure currents, suspended sediments, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen at the future outfall site in Massachusetts Bay since December 1989. On the first sea day, the mooring crew performed a turn-around of two bottom tripods and two sub-surface moorings. The sampling crew collected sediment samples and bottom videos on the second day. Circulation in Massachusetts Bay
The mean current typically flows southerly through Massachusetts Bay and turns offshore into the Gulf of Maine (fig. 5). During much of the year, this weak counterclockwise circulation persists in Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bays, principally driven by the southeastward coastal current in the Gulf of Maine. The current proceeds southwesterly into the bay south of Cape Ann, southward along the western shore, and easterly out of the bay north of Race Point, typically at a strength of about 5 cm/s (0.1 knot). This flow pattern may reverse in the fall, especially near the western shore, because preferential cooling of the shallow water creates denser water near the shore. Fluctuations of the current caused by wind and density variations alter this simple flow pattern on any day (figs. 5 and 6).
