Massachusetts Bay

Massachusetts
One of the six New England states, and one of the first 13 states in the Union (it entered in 1788), Massachusetts is known as the "Old Colony State." The Pilgrims established their settlement at Plymouth in 1620, arriving on the Mayflower . They were followed shortly by the Puritans, who established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Puritans named their colony after a local Indian tribe whose name means "a large hill place." The birthplace of many of the ideals of the American Revolution, Massachusetts attracted people who believed in self-government. It's appropriate that the state flower is the mayflower, also known as the trailing arbutus. ... [Read More]

Massachusetts Bay Cruise
Despite the rain and snow on February 15 and 16, cruise number 32 of the Mass Bay Long-Term Study was successfully completed aboard the USCG Cutter Marcus Hanna . The project, jointly funded by the USGS and the Massachusetts Water Resources Association (MWRA), has maintained moorings to measure currents, suspended sediments, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen at the future outfall site in Massachusetts Bay since December 1989. On the first sea day, the mooring crew performed a turn-around of two bottom tripods and two sub-surface moorings. The sampling crew collected sediment samples and bottom videos on the second day. Participants included: Mike Bothner, Brad Butman, Dann Blackwood, Jon Borden, Michael Casso, Jessica Cote, Marinna Martini, Rick Rendigs, and David Walsh . ... [Read More]

Circulation in Massachusetts Bay
The mean current typically flows southerly through Massachusetts Bay and turns offshore into the Gulf of Maine (fig. 5). During much of the year, this weak counterclockwise circulation persists in Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bays, principally driven by the southeastward coastal current in the Gulf of Maine. The current proceeds southwesterly into the bay south of Cape Ann, southward along the western shore, and easterly out of the bay north of Race Point, typically at a strength of about 5 cm/s (0.1 knot). This flow pattern may reverse in the fall, especially near the western shore, because preferential cooling of the shallow water creates denser water near the shore. Fluctuations of the current caused by wind and density variations alter this simple flow pattern on any day (figs. 5 and 6). In most of Massachusetts Bay, the flow-through flushing time for the surface waters ranges from 20 to 45 days. In western Massachusetts Bay near the new outfall site, mixing and transport of water an ... [Read More]

Predicting the Impact of Relocating Boston's Sewage Outfall
In studies by the USGS, the ECOM model was configured to encompass all ofMassachusetts and Cape Cod Bays, with a resolution that varied from approximately 1 km in western Massachusetts Bay to about 6 km in the open ocean outside Massachusetts Bay. Simulations were performed over an 18-month period from January 1990 to July 1991, a time ofparticularly intense oceanographic data collection by the Massachusetts Bays Estuary Program, a program funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ... Contaminant Transport in Massachusetts Bay
Construction of a new treatment plant and outfall to clean up Boston Harboris currently one of the world's largest public works projects, costing about$4 billion. There is concern about the long-term impact of contaminants onMassachusetts Bay and adjacent Gulf of Maine because these areas are usedextensively for transportation, recreation, fishing, and tourism, as wellas waste disposal. Public concern also focuses on Stellwagen Bank, locatedon the eastern side of Massachusetts Bay, which is an important habitat forendangered whales. Contaminants reach Massachusetts Bay not only from BostonHarbor, but from other coastal communities on the Gulf of Maine, as well as fromthe atmosphere. Knowledge of the pathways, mechanisms, and rates at which pollutants are transported throughout these coastal environments is needed to address a wide range of management questions. ... [Read More]

Metal Concentrations in Sediments of Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay Document Environmental Change
Metal Concentrations in Sediments of Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay Document Environmental Change "Over the last decade, contaminants entering Boston Harbor have been significantly reduced. Although parts of the harbor still contain metals at concentrations above toxicity guidelines for bottom-dwelling animals, we have observed decreasing metal concentrations over time that are encouraging. We are learning which natural sedimentary processes significantly influence the fate and transport of metals in Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay." ... [Read More]
