The Local Market.   On the local market, fresh meat, both local and imported, is cut in the European manner and is relatively expensive although good pork and lamb are available at lower prices.  Local beef is not aged and lacks the tenderness of American beef.  Fresh chicken, eggs, and local cheese are always available.  Many Greeks shop daily, so a shopping district is an important part of every suburb.  Each has its own grocer, butcher, florist, greengrocer, pharmacy, and a fish merchant.  Fresh produce, fruits, plants, eggs, and sometimes fish can also be purchased at the colorful weekly neighborhood farmers' markets (laiki).  Fish is available but expensive.
