Maryland Vacation

Fishing in Maryland: Introduction - Maryland Department of Natural Resources
Over a dozen studies have shown that being with family and friends, relaxing and being outdoors and close to nature are the primary reasons people spend time on the water. A family doesn't have to spend a fortune on a theme park vacation to have an experience that everyone will enjoy. Although your first meeting with Mickey Mouse will probably be memorable, chances are it will pale in comparison to memories of spending time on the water with the people you love. ...

There are news stories every week about the stress and time crunch felt by working Americans and their families. People are searching for ways to escape the daily routine, be closer to nature and focus more on family and relationships. Studies show that people who participate frequently in outdoor recreation are more satisfied with life overall. For a weeklong vacation or just a quiet Saturday morning, recreational fishing and boating are great ways to "get away from it all." ... [Read More]

Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. ~ MyMaryland eNewsletter
During the early 1900s, the island consisted of nearly 1,000 acres and supported a thriving community of about 100 inhabitants, several farms, a school, a church, a post office and a saw mill. By the 1920s, residents began leaving the island as more and more of its landmass fell victim to erosion. In the 1930s, a group of politicians bought the island, and in the following years, the island served as a popular vacation retreat for Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. While the island continued to erode, all that remained by the early 1990s were several small clusters of islets rising just above the surface of the water. ... [Read More]

There is a constant, daily need for blood donors, so that the needs of trauma victims, cancer patients, burn victims, surgical patients and others in need of blood transfusions can be met. During the summer months, it becomes even more challenging to maintain a safe and sufficient blood supply. Schools and universities are out of session and many frequent or regular donors leave for vacation. When blood shortages occur, physicians must often make difficult decisions regarding who will receive blood and who will not - a situation that can only be resolved by recruiting enough blood donors every day to meet the demand. ... Forest Loss to Development
Although forests are vulnerable to a variety ofnatural stresses, including fire, drought, pests and disease, by farthe greatest threat to loss of forest cover in a rapidly urbanizing statelike Maryland is urban type of development. This includes development ofsecond or vacation homes in parts of the state not usually thought of ashighly urban.Between 1997 and 2000, close to 37,000 acres of forest land weredeveloped, representing a loss of some 1.5% of the forests in Maryland in1997. The greatest losses occurred in Western Maryland, as well as thegreatest loss of the large intact blocks of forest that are important tothe State’s green infrastructure network. Western Maryland lost more greeninfrastructure forest than the rest of the regions of the State combined. This indicator was developed by comparing MarylandDepartment of Planning land use/land cover data for 1997 and for 2000using a Geographic Information System(GIS). Documentation of the processcan be found in the document Forest ... [Read More]

Site Design & Watersheds
When most of us go on vacation, we love to hear the sounds of nature with birds singing and critters moving about. Yet when we get home, about the only sounds of nature we hear are horns blaring, cars driving, or silence. But you can easily support wildlife in your own backyard. The Department of Natural Resources' Wild Acres Program provides easy-to-follow instructions and information on how to provide for and construct wildlife habitat. ... [Read More]

Year round efforts include: Working with rental agencies in bear country to assist in educating visitors on bear proofing their vacation home. MBSS Symposium
We regret to announce that the MBSS Symposium planned for September16-17 has been postponed until the spring or fall of 1999. Despite claims of heavyworkloads and hectic schedules, rumors are spreading that the real reason for thepostponement is that the presence of both Paul Kayzak and Scott Stranko is required at animportant fishing expedition (a.k.a. vacation) in the Bahamas. So far it is all just talk, and as of yet neither Paul nor Scott have confessed. Look for future details on thesymposium in the upcoming months. ... [Read More]

Ocean Side_The Maryland Fishing Report
The reports from offshore have been very sparse this week due to some pretty stiff weather over the weekend and it doesn't look like it's going to get better soon. Today the wind forecast is for 25-35 knots in the Baltimore Canyon area and it's supposed to increase to 30-40 knots through Friday and only decrease to 25-35 knots on Saturday. "We're going to need a bigger boat." The few boats that did slip out late last week before the weekend blow reported bluefin tuna in the area of the Sausages north to Massey's Canyon. Yellowfin tuna and longfin albacore were reported along the 100-fathom line near the Baltimore Canyon. Pictures of fishermen with exciting catches have also been sparse this week, so I thought I'd slip this picture in of an array of Hawaiian chrome headed lures. They use lures more than bait over there and they sure have plenty to choose from. If you look carefully you can see two glass shelves of chrome jet heads below the rigged ones on top. While on vacation in Sept ... [Read More]
