Danjon Scale
The Moon's appearance during a total lunar eclipse can vary enormously from one eclipse to the next. Obviously, the geometry of the Moon's path through the umbra plays an important role. Not as apparent is the effect that Earth's atmosphere has on eclipses. Although the physical mass of Earth blocks off all direct sunlight from the umbra, the planet's atmosphere refracts some of the Sun's rays into the shadow. Earth's atmosphere contains varying amounts of water (clouds, mist, precipitation) and solid particles (dust, organic debris, volcanic ash). This material filters and attenuates the sunlight before it's refracted into the umbra. For instance, large or frequent volcanic eruptions dumping huge quantities of ash into the atmosphere are often followed by very dark, red eclipses for several years. Extensive cloud cover along Earth's limb also tends to darken the eclipse by blocking sunlight. The French astronomer A. Danjon proposed a useful five point scale for evaluating the visual ap ... Yellow Ribbons: Ties with Tradition(The American Folklife Center, Library of Congress)
To summarize the ground covered thus far: it appears that the plot of the song that inspired Penne Laingen is drawn from modern urban oral tradition, while the choice of the yellow ribbon as symbol is conditioned by requirements of versification. But beyond these requirements, there remains another possible source for Levine and Brown's adoption of the yellow ribbon. In 1949 Argosy Pictures released a motion picture starring John Wayne and Joanne Dru which was called She Wore a Yellow Ribbon . The picture was popular and the theme song, "(Round Her Neck) She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," became a song hit. The composers for the movie were M. Ottner and Leroy Parker. Not surprisingly, their lyrics make reference to the characters and events in the film. But, in one form or another, this song long predates the movie. It has been registered for copyright a number of times, the earliest claim for it being the composition of George A. Norton in 1917. Norton gave as his title "Ro ... [Read More]

These pages provide a listing of the 3000 plus subordinate stations with the differences already applied. These differences are located in the prediction header. The list of subordinate stations has been broken down into states and other areas where there are water level stations. Each state is further broken down into regions. Each region presents a list of the water levelstations in the area. The stations are listed geographically; thus, stations that are near each other along the shoreline are near each other in the listing. This simplifies locating a station of interest. ...
