Women's Health USA 2003
Among females who were not pregnant, American Indian/Alaska Native women were most likely to smoke in 2000-2001, followed by non-Hispanic White women. Although the prevalence of smoking was lower among pregnant women in all racial and ethnic groups, non-Hispanic White women were more than twice as likely to smoke during pregnancy than non-Hispanic Black women. There was a slight increase in recent years in the proportion of pregnant women who reported cigarette smoking in the past month, from 18.6 percent in 1999-2000 to 19.8 percent in 2000-2001. Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, low birth weight, and infant mortality. ... [Read More]

The History of Trout Hatcheries in Maryland
MarylandDepartment of Natural Resources (MD DNR), in cooperation with Chesapeake Baywatermen, has conducted several studies to examine the striped bass by-catch inthe white perch gill net fishery. Small striped bass were caught in anchor andstake gill nets that were targeting white perch, since the white perch fisheryuses smaller mesh sizes, and white perch and young striped bass share similarhabitat and behavior. Anchor and stake gill nets were often set and left tofish overnight, and if bad weather interfered with retrieval, the nets could beleft out for several days. Mortality of undersized perch and striped bass inthese nets was very high. Several studies conducted in the 1980s showed thateffort could be better directed at the target species with drift gill nets. Thesenets had to be retrieved within a matter of hours and undersized fish could bereleased with lower mortality (Speir and Early 2001, Speir 2001). Thesefindings combined with the declining striped bass stock ... [Read More]

Maryland Horseshoe Crabs
GILLS A horseshoe crab absorbs oxygen from the water using gills that are divided into 5 distinct pairs located under the abdomen. Each pair of gills has a large flap-like structure covering leaf-like membranes called lamellae. Gaseous exchange occurs on the surface of the lamellae as the gills are in motion. Each gill contains approximately 150 lamellae that appear as pages in a book. They are commonly called book gills. The gills also function as paddles to propel juvenile horseshoe crabs through the water. ... [Read More]
