Deep Creek Lake Recreation and Land Use Plan The Lake was created in 1925 when the Deep Creek hydroelectric project was constructed. The land which was flooded by construction of the dam as well as many properties surrounding the newly created lake had been acquired by the power company. Eventually, the Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) began divesting itself of some of the real estate surrounding the lake, although a buffer zone around the lake was retained. Over the next few decades, the Deep Creek Lake region developed as a recreational resort region. In 1968, Penelec was issued a license to operate the facility by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Penelec, as the lake owner, had established corporate policies and procedures for managing recreation and access to Deep Creek Lake. In 1980, the State of Maryland agreed to take over management of recreation and access at Deep Creek Lake. Recreation.gov Deep Creek Lake State Park lies just west of the Allegheny Front on a large plateau known as the Tablelands or Allegany Highlands. Its location at the southernmost end of Meadow Mountain places it west of the Eastern Continental Divide and within the Mississippi River watershed. Deep Creek Lake State Park Trail Guide Deep Creek Lake State Park offers a variety of water-related recreation. The one mile of waterfront provides a sandy beach with a roped swimming area with lifeguards on duty in the summer months. Picnicking is available in the park's waterfront area. Tables, grills, pavilions, playgrounds and restrooms are available. Pavilions may be reserved in advance by calling the statewide reservation service. The public boat launch facility is open most of the year except when winter weather and or ice conditions prohibit access. Fishing is popular on the lake for stocked trout, walleye, bass and yellow perch. Deep Creek Lake is also known for a large population of smallmouth and largemouth bass. Bass tournaments are often held on the lake. Two accessible fishing docks are available at the boat launch.
