Ocean Side_The Maryland Fishing Report
Offshore fishing action off Ocean City has really taken a focus on the area around the Hambone and the Baltimore canyon lately. The bluefin tuna fishing at the hambone continues to be very good. Fishermen are chunking or trolling near working scallop boats and making some impressive catches of bluefins up to 140 lbs. Many boats are catching their three fish limit in as little as an hour or so. Yellowfin tuna are being found at Massey's Canyon and the Baltimore Canyon as well. The big news from the Baltimore Canyon is the longfin albacore and white marlin bite that has developed there recently. Dolphin continue to be found throughout the area and at times it can be a real "hay day" when a concentration of dolphin can be found hovering around some form of floating debris. Boats fishing a little more closely to shore have been finding excellent croaker fishing in 80' of water off Ocean City. The sea bass season remains closed until September 22nd, so the attention is now focused on croak ... [Read More]

Offshore fishermen have had some tough weather lately, but conditions promise to improve. Bluefin tuna are being caught over a wide area at locations such as the Hambone, Lumpy Bottom and Massey's Canyon and most boats are catching their one fish boat limit whether they are trolling or chunking. Roland Williams proudly holds his 70 lb bluefin for the camera that he caught at Massey's Canyon. Yellowfin tuna are being found in many areas but not in the numbers most fishermen would like to see. The 40- fathom line and the Lumpy Bottom out to the Canyons is where most are being found. The sea bass fishing on the near shore wrecks has been fair to good and shows signs of improving. Limits of sea bass are not common but anglers are coming close and putting together good catches of sea bass, tautog, triggerfish and spadefish. Captains and fishermen happily report that they are finding large croakers again in the sloughs off the beach. Flounder fishing continues to be a focal point in the ... [Read More]

The flounder fishing several miles off the beach continues to be good and the size of the fish has everyone happy. The recreational sea bass season closed today and will be closed until the 23 rd of September. The last few days have seen good catches of sea bass and it's hoped they will be schooled up on the wrecks when it reopens. Noel "Kit" Lohr of Pewaukee Wisconsin set a new state record for spadefish on last Thursday with an 11 lb 6 ½ oz fish. This is the third time this record has been broken this year, but being that this time it's by over 2 lbs, this one might stand for a while. Heavy ground swells made for strong surf conditions over the weekend and tough fishing. Fishermen using bloodworms, squid and a lot of lead caught kingfish, spot and some small trout. Those fishermen who used cut spot or mullet had fun catching small bluefish in the surf. Fishermen at the inlet and inside have been enjoying some good flounder fishing on the top of the flood tide. Inside the inlet, f ... [Read More]

The reports from offshore have been very sparse this week due to some pretty stiff weather over the weekend and it doesn't look like it's going to get better soon. Today the wind forecast is for 25-35 knots in the Baltimore Canyon area and it's supposed to increase to 30-40 knots through Friday and only decrease to 25-35 knots on Saturday. "We're going to need a bigger boat." The few boats that did slip out late last week before the weekend blow reported bluefin tuna in the area of the Sausages north to Massey's Canyon. Yellowfin tuna and longfin albacore were reported along the 100-fathom line near the Baltimore Canyon. Pictures of fishermen with exciting catches have also been sparse this week, so I thought I'd slip this picture in of an array of Hawaiian chrome headed lures. They use lures more than bait over there and they sure have plenty to choose from. If you look carefully you can see two glass shelves of chrome jet heads below the rigged ones on top. While on vacation in Sept ... [Read More]

It is hard to imagine a place that can be more affected by weather and wind than big water and there is only one piece of water bigger than the Atlantic. That of course is the Pacific and if you've ever sailed or flew across it, you'd agree it's a humbling experience. Unfortunately we experienced another Northeaster on our side of the Atlantic and then some pretty strong southwest winds. There are the sparsest reports from offshore since it's been so rough. School bluefin tuna have been seen here and there pushing water and cavorting. Hopefully someone will get out this week before things sour again with the weather. A few boats ventured out to the near shore wrecks to fish for sea bass over the weekend and they caught sea bass. Captains report that the fishery seems to be tapering off to a degree and there are quite a few throwbacks. Bluefish and spiny dogfish have also become more numerous on the wrecks. The surf fishing action was really heating up late last week before the weathe ... [Read More]

Ocean Side_The Maryland Fishing Report
The only fishing action reported this week comes from the surf zone and around the Ocean City Inlet. Surf fishermen continue to find large bluefish in the surf on bait rigs using either mullet or menhaden. A few striped bass are being caught, but apparently it's nothing to write home about. Surf fishermen in N.J. are not doing much better and North Carolina has striped bass big time. I'm not sure how we missed out on this years fall migration. There is evidence from boats within 15 miles of the beach of big schools of striped bass moving through the area. Why not take the shortest route to North Carolina from up north? That seems to be what the fish are doing. There are a lot of hopeful fishermen in boats drifting eels in the Ocean City Inlet trying to hook up a striped bass. A few are being caught, but the action has generally been termed slow.   ... [Read More]
