Maryland Lieutenant Governor ~ Michael S. Steele Maryland's Historically Black Colleges & Universities: Lt. Governor Steele plays a significant role in preserving and promoting Maryland's five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU): Coppin State College, Morgan State University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Bowie State University and Sojourner-Douglass College. Lt. Governor Steele advocated for Maryland's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) to receive unprecedented funding in Governor Ehrlich's fiscal year 2005 budget. Upper eastern shore trib team cover crop 319 project update The Upper Eastern Shore Tributary Team, in partnership with the Farm Bureau, Universityof Maryland Extension Service and University research staff, has received a §319 CleanWater Act grant to conduct a pilot project to establish 1,000 acres of cover crops thoughaerial seeding. The project was developed to address major barriers to the adoption ofcover crops on a wide scale, and to heighten awareness of their benefits in the prevalentcrop rotations in the Upper Eastern Shore. ... Maryland Greenways (Ecological and Recreational Greenways) The Manokin River Greenways is a potential greenways along the Manokin River. This corridor would link the county-owned Raccoon Point Recreation Area at the mouth of the river with the Manokin River Park in the town of Princess Anne and finally with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Campus (UMES). The town of Princess Anne has developed a draft Comprehensive Plan (1996) which recommends the development of a canoe route consistent with threatened and endangered species habitat, an educational nature trail, and a memorial to town veterans in conjunction with the existing town park. Extension of a bike trail or greenways from the proposed UMES access road and east to the park is also envisioned. The Somerset County Draft Comprehensive Plan (1996) also supports linking the university campus with Manokin Park and Raccoon Point as part of bicycle/pedestrian enhancements. ... [Read More]
Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. ~ The Five Pillars The build-out schedule for networkMaryland, Maryland's digital communication backbone, is being accelerated, with a Point of Presence established in every jurisdiction by early 2005. Already, the University System and Johns Hopkins are using the network to share extremely large research files and attract additional grant money. Governor Ehrlich worked with the nine Eastern Shore counties, the Eastern Shore regional councils and TEDCO to address the need for affordable high-speed Internet access on the Eastern Shore. On October 31, 2003 he announced the extension of DSL broadband service to 26 Eastern Shore communities as part of a larger strategy to extend Digital Subscribe Line (DSL) coverage in other rural areas of the State. Governor Ehrlich not only brought broadband service to Maryland's rural counties, but also, through negotiation, eliminated the cost penalty rural business had felt. Small scale educational rocket initiative The Small-scale Educational Rocket Initiative (SERI) pilot program currently has three teams, Salisbury University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Wicomico High School, all located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, working on constructing rockets and payloads. ...
