West Nile Virus Keeping track of the number of dead birds helps public health officials monitor the human health risk for West Nile virus. Because about 90% of dead birds that have tested WNV positive both nationally and in Maine have been corvids (crows, blue jays, ravens), and dead corvids were substantially more likely to be WNV positive than other dead birds, we will be limiting our WNV surveillance this year to corvids. If you see a dead crow, blue jay, or raven please contact the toll-free Bird Reporting Line at 1-888-697-5846 . Note: even though not all dead corvids will be collected or tested, all reports will be recorded and will help public health officials monitor the spread of West Nile virus in Maine. We will not be monitoring deaths of birds that are not corvids. ... [Read More]
