In 1992, work began on developing a Maine EMS Trauma Plan. This plan was drafted by the MEMS Trauma Advisory Committee (TAC) as required by the Legislature. This plan has been voluntarily adopted by every hospital in Maine. Three hospitals applied for consideration as Trauma Centers (Maine Medical Center, Portland; Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston; and Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor), all other hospitals applied to be Trauma System Hospitals. The Trauma Center applicants completed an extensive application and on-site review process before being approved as such by the TAC.
