Maine Local Government - Town of Camden - Main Page Camden is a town in Knox County, incorporated as the town of Cambden (old spelling) on February 17, 1791 from the former Cambden Plantation. After annexing land from Warren in 1836, it split in 1893 to form Camden (new spelling) and the new town of Rockport. Camden is located on U.S. Route 1 which dominates the main street, making it accessible to summer tourists but slow traveling for casual motorists during peak season. The town’s landing and waterfront are picturesque and the model of a coastal town, catering to Windjammer sailing opportunities and countless personal pleasure boats. Several windjammers are on the National Register of Historic Places. The credit card company MBNA is the major employer. The Fernald’s Neck Preserve, partially in Lincolnville and managed by the Nature Conservancy, covers 315 acres of a peninsula jutting into Lake Megunticook. Maine Local Government - Town of Rockport - Main Page Rockport is a town in Knox County, originally a part of Camden until those two split on February 25, 1891 and the name Rockport was adopted. Later that same year, and again in 1893, it annexed land from Camden. Lime production was once a major industry and in 1817 three hundred casks of lime where shipped to Washington for use in building the Capitol, recently damaged by the British in the War of 1812. Since 1889, the Samoset Hotel, then resort, has been a prime coastal resort location, renowned for spectacular and expansive views of Penobscot Bay, distant islands and the Camden Hills rising to the east.
