Maine Local Government - City of Bath - Main Page
Bath, the only city in, and county seat of, Sagadahoc County, was incorporated as a town from a portion of Georgetown on February 17, 1781.   On February 14, 1844, it set off land for the formation of the town of West Bath. On June 14, 1847 it was incorporated as a city and later, in 1855, it annexed some land from West Bath to create its current boundaries. One of its early and famous residents was William King, Maine's first governor. The City is home to Bath Iron Works (BIW), a major builder of military ships with sophisticated electronic weaponry.  Once locally owned, BIW is now a division of the General Dynamics Corporation. In 1981, DEP approved the disposal of asbestos on the site; and in June 1986, DEP approved the closure of the asbestos disposal area on the site. The closure plan included the installation of six monitoring wells and the capping of the western portion of the site. The landfill stopped receiving all liquid waste from BIW in 1979 and the disposal of all waste on the site ceased in 1985.
