Florida Parishes
Because they do not fit the state's well known French Creole and River Road plantation stereotypes, Louisiana's Florida Parishes are little known outside the state. However, citizens of South Louisiana (and especially of New Orleans) have enjoyed the region's natural beauty and healthy climate for well over a century. The Florida Parishes lie east of the Mississippi River and north of lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain in the southeastern portion of the state. The region contains eight parishes: East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Livingston, St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and Washington. Although the area's name implies cohesiveness and a shared developmental pattern, this is not completely true. Certain parishes share a common heritage, while others followed divergent patterns of growth. Plantation and small farm agriculture, railroads, the lumber and vacation industries, and multiple ethnic groups--all have contributed to the growth and heritage of the region known ... [Read More]

Monthly Column - April 2005
As the school year draws to a close and the summer vacation lies ahead, young people across the state will be celebrating. Many of these celebrations may include alcohol. Underage drinking continues to be a problem among Louisiana’s young people. About 10.7 million Americans between the ages of 12-20 report current alcohol use. This number represents nearly 29% of the age group for whom alcohol is illegal. According to statistics from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the first use of alcohol typically begins around age 12. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that children who begin drinking before the age of 15 have a four times greater risk of becoming an alcoholic as an adult than those who begin drinking at the legal age of 21. ... NOAA Future - Your State
NESDIS has a wealth of physical information about the United States, including environmental factors and geophysical characteristics. Topographic data are among the most important data sets for many scientific, technical, and other applications. Even when not used directly in a study, topographic data are often used in preparing visualization tools. Topography data are used in such disparate areas as modeling climate, water runoff, minimum safe aircraft flight altitudes, vacation planning, and even for generating musical compositions. Allied Signal Aerospace uses topography data from the National Geophysical Data Center to develop minimum safe altitude and other safety tools for commercial aircraft. ... [Read More]

Louisiana OPH - Infectious Disease Epidemiology Program: West Nile Virus and Other Arboviruses
Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. Water gardens are fashionable but become major mosquito producers if they are allowed to stagnate. Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. A swimming pool that is left untended by a family that goes on vacation for a month can produce enough mosquitoes to result in neighborhood-wide complaints. Be aware that mosquitoes may even breed in the water that collects on swimming pool covers. ... [Read More]
